Nova Ukrainian Dance Academy celebrates the rich traditions of Ukrainian dance while building strong, versatile dancers through foundational training in ballet and character dance, all in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley, America's Carpathian Mountains. Our programs blend cultural artistry with disciplined technique, helping students develop not only as performers, but as confident, expressive individuals. Whether stepping into the studio for the first time or advancing their skills, dancers at Nova experience a welcoming community rooted in heritage, passion, and excellence.
Classes are a blend of ballet, character dance and Ukrainian Dance. The ballet training is in the Vaganova style, as followed by the renowned Russian ballet school. Character dancing is a form of stylized ballet, representative of traditional regional dance of regions such Hungary , Russia, Poland, Italy and Spain. Many ballets, such as Swan Lake, Don Quixote and the Nutcracker feature variations based on character dance.
Classes are typically structured along the standard ballet schedule, including barre, center and diagonal, but will feature character and Ukrainian dance steps in addition to ballet. Students will learn combinations and full dances in the Ukrainian style and have an opportunity to perform in a Spring recital.
Nova Ukrainian Dance Academy also hosts a Ukrainian dance camp every summer. This is a 5-day (half-day) intensive where students will take class and learn Ukranian dances that they perform on the last day of camp. You can see videos of the latest camp performance here
